God does not love because we need love; we need love because God is love. We are creatures of love, created for love because we are created for God.
We were created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, and that enjoyment consists of increasing delight in the communication of God’s love to us because of Christ (Eph 2:7).
Love is contrary to the survival of the fittest. True love can never be the goal of an ever-evolving, self-styled human being because at its core is self-denial not self-preservation. In the economy of God’s purposes in creation, love is superior to life. The very Giver of life died in the deepest demonstration of love knowable (Rom 5:8). Jesus taught us that “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13; cf. 1 John 3:16). David cried out to God, “your steadfast love is better than life” (Psalm 63:3). We exist to love, because we exist for God and God is love.
We are creatures, created for God who is love. God help us to live and love according to your purposes.
